In a recent report, Pyramid Research predicted that 950 million people will be accessing at least one social networking site via their mobile by 2012. This translates into revenues of between $28 to $50 billion dollars. And teens, with their connected lifestyle, are a prime demographic for mobile advertising.
Teens use their mobile devices for everything from connecting to friends, playing games, texting and even the rare email. And increasingly, the LA TIMES reports, teens are signing up to have companies deliver text message alerts, advertising and other promotions directly to their phone, eyeballs and wallet.
- Hearst Magazines, for example, has developed a variety of mobile content sites geared towards teen girls with promotional tie-ins for cosmetics & other merchandise.
- Teens can use Mogreet, a mobile video messaging service, to send a prom invite.
- PromGirl.com has a mobile widget for girls to easily browse prom dresses.
- Over at Element Skateboards, teens can sign up for mobile alerts on skateboard events, promotions or contests.
Teens are already totally wired, so it's natural that teens will use their mobile devices as a way to connect with the brands they love. And advertisers are all too happy to oblige.
