Biography

Derek E. Baird, M.A. is a media technologist, speaker, and author specializing in web strategy, mobile tech, Gen Y, educational technology/media, youth marketing, edutainment and online communities.

He has designed and developed online communities for U.S. and international clients in both the corporate and non-profit sectors.

Recent clients include: Yahoo!, The Museum of Tolerance, The National College of Ireland, Stone Yamashita Partners, Pearson Education, The Digital Alliance, PBWiki, Pearson, Kia Motors America, Yahoo! Southeast Asia, PBwiki, and YackPack.

At Yahoo! he co-designed Yahoo! For Teachers, a social network for educators. In addition, he designed and led a National Yahoo! Teachers Tour where where he taught educators how to integrate social/new media technologies into their classroom.

He has also presented at several technology events including the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Conference, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Conference on Cyberbullying and the 2007 American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Conference.

He has published articles on education technology, web strategy, new media, mobile and online communities in several peer reviewed & online journals including: Campus-Wide Information Systems, TechLearning, The Journal of Education Technology Systems and YPulse.

He also is a contributor to Didactics World, an educational media publication focused on the Middle East and India.

His chapter on social media will be published in The International Handbook of Research on New Media Literacy later this year.

Derek received his M.A. in Education Technology from the Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) at Pepperdine University, and has taught in the Masters of Education Technology program.
