Derek E. Baird, M.A. is a digital media strategist specializing in the development, planning, implementation and execution of multi-platform (web, TV, VOD) digital/social media, online community & content experiences focused on the educational media (edutainment), entertainment and digital kid/youth media markets. As a consultant, he advises clients in both the U.S. and international markets.
Recent clients include: Yahoo!, Pearson Media, Yackpack.com, Simon Wiesenthal Center (Digital), Wordperfect, Kia University (Digital), CBS, Nestlé, Salt Lake Olympic Committee (SLOC), Stone Yamashita Partners, PBwiki.com, MacVision TV, and Yahoo! Southeast Asia.
At Yahoo! Derek was part of a small internal start-up team that designed and launched a social networking community and user generated educational content (UGC) project for teachers, parents and kids. He also led social media and UGC workshops for Yahoo! at various locations around the United States.
He has also presented at several national educational media & technology events including the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Conference, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Conference on Cyberbullying and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Technology Conference.
Derek has published articles on education technology, digital web strategy, social media, mobile technology trends, social entertainment, edutainment and online communities in both peer reviewed & online journals including: Campus-Wide Information Systems, TechLearning, The Journal of Education Technology Systems and YPulse.
He also is a contributor to Didactics World, a publication focused on web-based & mobile technology trends in the Middle East and India. His blog, Barking Robot, has been syndicated in several leading publications including Business Week and Chicago Sun-Times.
He is also currently working with singer-songwriter Samantha Murphy on the relaunch of The Highway Girl, a vibrant entertainment, travel, technology and lifestyle destination. The site features live performances and interviews with some of the leading indie music artists in the world. The show is available both on the web and via Roku.
Past guests on The Highway Girl include: Aimee Mann, Martha Wainwright, Rob Giles, Elvis Perkins, Cary Brothers, Eisley, Juliette Lewis, Teitur, The Devoted Few, The Slow Push, Juliana Hatfield, Inara George, Mike Schmid and The Break and Repair Method. A new site and shopping experience launches in June 2010.
Derek is also a member of The Purple List, PSFK’s network of independent designers, journalists, marketers, trend experts and entrepreneurs.
Youth Research Partners (formerly mobileYouth), a leading international consultancy focused on mobile culture & trends, included Derek on its list of the Top 20 Youth Marketing Bloggers. He is also on the Advisory Board for the 2010 Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup.
Derek received his M.A. in Education Technology from the Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) at Pepperdine University and holds Masters Certificates in both Project Management & Online Digital Strategies.
